LIFE-GROUP LEADER INSTRUCTIONS

 1.    Take time to read the passages of study and pray through them. Work through them in your own life and consider yourself first in all of the questions below. 

2. Think through ways that you can help the group understand that it is possible to live the Beatitudes, but NOT without Christ's help.

3. Think of practical ways to show our students that believing otherwise leads to self-righteousness rather than life in Jesus. Reveal sin and point out the need for repentance before the Beatitudes are fought for.

Passages of Study

- Matthew 5:1-12

Questions

What does it mean to be poor in spirit? In view of this, what things can keep us from realizing our spiritual bankruptcy? (i.e. pride and idolatry)

How does Jesus teach us that mourning is a good thing and not a bad thing? (repentace leads to Jesus)

What is the true meaning of meekness? (meekness - a true view of oneself, and acting that out in attitude and conduct toward others) How does this play out in life, school, family, etc?

What is hungering and thirsting for righteousness? How does that work in respect to being poor in spirit?

Why is mercy so important? (Christ shows mercy on the merciful)

How does pure in heart work its way out in our spiritual walk? 

What are some practical ways to live as a peacemaker?

Does being persecuted scare you? If so, why?

Application

In what immediately practical ways can we live these commands out in our schools, families, jobs, etc?

How can we avoid being tripped up by the enemy while trying to live these things out?

How can we avoid being our own worst enemy while trying to live these things out?
